The shallowness of the Liberty bust on the Chain Cents did not provide good wearing qualities, and the frantic expression on Liberty's face was not well received, so this more attractive design replaced the Chain Cents. A total of 63,353 Wreath Cents was coined from April to July of 1793 before this type was discontinued. Two edge devices were employed: The Vine and Bars pattern was replaced midway through production with an edge reading ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR in incused letters. The latter is transitional with the next type of cent and is slightly the scarcer for this type. The most commonly seen variety is S-9, while S-5, -6, -8, -10 and -11a are more scarce. Varieties S-7 and NC-2, -3, -4 and -5 are genuinely rare.
